Step 2: Sizzling Starts

Here's a sample from one of our most popular activities. It's taken from Step 2: Sizzling Starts.

In the program you have three different sections.

1) A 'Top Technique' which explains how to make stories start with a bang. In Sizzling Starts the technique shows how to eliminate 'warm-up writing' such as:

• I woke up that morning...
• I got out of bed, it was the start of the holidays...
• We all piled into the bus to go to the zoo and ate...

2) A 'Real Life Writing' activity which gives creative ideas from everyday life. e.g. How movies start with a bang - and how we can copy that technique in our own writing.

3) The 'Five Day Activity'. This is by far the most effective part of the program. Like you would practise a tennis serve over and over again, this activity gives a child the opportunity to practise a skill DAILY until they become confident. The activities are designed to be interactive and interesting - they won't be bored!

Here is one of the 'Five Day Activity' segments for you to try. Your child has to create five story starts in five minutes. Sounds impossible? It's easy!
