FAQs

Do I have to know the Seven Steps to come along?

Yes, you need to have learned the theory and practice of the Seven Steps. This will ensure you get the most out of the session and take away a clear understanding of how the Seven Steps can be used with beginner writers.

To attend Applying the Seven Steps with Beginner Writers, you must have been trained in the Seven Steps through one or more of the following:

  • in a face-to-face training – either a Workshop or at your school
  • in the theory and practice of the Seven Steps as taught to you by a licensed Seven Steps Coach
  • via Seven Steps theory videos on Teacher Hub (formerly Seven Steps Online).

What age group of students does this training focus on?

This online session is for teachers of lower primary, and it focuses on teaching students in Foundation to Year 2. Kindergarten teachers and teachers of EAL/D students or students with special literacy needs may also find it useful.

Do you offer this workshop for a whole school?

If you are interested in holding this session for the teachers at your school, please contact us and we can have a chat to see if it’s possible. Please note that in order to hold a dedicated session for your staff, we would require at least 15 participants to attend.

Will you send out the session recording afterwards?

We occasionally record our sessions for training purposes, but we don’t make these recordings available. This specialist session relies heavily on interaction and discussion, and we want everyone to get the most out of it by attending live.

If you can’t make it to the session, please contact us to discuss rescheduling your booking. Please let us know as soon as possible – there will be a $25 rebooking fee if you miss the session with less than 24 hours’ notice.

My students haven’t started writing yet. Would the Seven Steps still be useful?

Literacy research in the Early Years has suggested that when children are encouraged to share their ideas through drawing, talking, acting and writing, they become more confident and involved writers.

Therefore, it’s important for pre-writers to learn the early concepts, theories and techniques of great writing, even before they start to write!

Students don’t need to be able to write yet. They can learn how to tell a story verbally, act it out, or tell it visually, e.g. through drawing or cutting and pasting pictures. Being able to read and write is not a necessity when it comes to telling a great story.

Can a group of us from my school attend the session together?

As you know as a teacher, the best way to learn is by doing! So Applying the Seven Steps with Beginner Writers is an interactive session where you get to try the activities and be a student. And we’ve been told many times that people get even more out of the day when they attend with their colleagues.

While we recommend you attend with fellow colleagues, we will require each participant to join the Zoom session using their own device. This will ensure you all get the most out of the activities and discussions. We also recommend using headphones, particularly if you are sitting in the same room as other participants.

What are the technical requirements for attending the workshop?

In order to ensure you have the best experience for your online workshop session, please ensure you have the following minimum system requirements:

  • A device (e.g. computer, laptop or tablet) with the Zoom app installed.
  • A reliable internet connection for video conferencing. More details >>
  • A webcam or HD webcam – built-in or USB plug-in.
  • Headphones or computer speakers – to make sure you can clearly hear our presenters.
  • A microphone for your device – you’ll be needing it when we run group activities. If your device doesn’t have a built-in microphone, you’ll need a set of headphones with mic included.

Tip: Log in early to make sure you’re set up correctly for your session.

I missed the session! What should I do?

Just give us a call on 03 9521 8439 and we’ll see if there are any spaces available in a future session.

If you’re booked in for a session but can no longer attend, please let us know as soon as possible. There will be a $25 rebooking fee if you miss the session with less than 24 hours’ notice.
