So what makes Seven Steps so effective?

We break writing down.

Teaching and learning writing can be challenging. But it doesn’t have to be.

Seven Steps makes writing so much easier by breaking it down into manageable Steps. Students build confidence practising each writing technique in isolation using fun, collaborative activities.

After mastering the individual Steps, students learn how to put them together to write complete texts, becoming independent, creative writers.

We make it explicit.

Seven Steps explicitly teaches the skills that professional authors use. These building blocks to great writing help students:

  • come up with unique and cohesive ideas
  • plan and structure an engaging text
  • hook the reader from the first sentence
  • bring writing to life with dialogue and descriptive language
  • hold the readers’ interest and end with impact.

Swipe through each of the Steps to learn how they lay the foundations of engaging writing in any text type.

As an EAL/D teacher, Seven Steps really supports our pedagogy. They understand the importance of quality teaching, explicit modelling and oral interaction!

We are research-based.

The principles that underpin the Seven Steps are based on best-practice pedagogy, aligned with the Science of Learning and supported by years of educational research. We call them the five ‘secrets’:

  1. Chunk large tasks
  2. Repetition builds muscle memory
  3. Think first, write second
  4. Verbal is vital
  5. Consistency creates change.

I’m amazed that one program can cater to such a diversity of needs, ages and learners, while targeting the same learning outcomes. Breaking writing tasks into chunks and repeating them often really works!

~ Rebecca Drozdoff, Southern Vales Christian College

We are curriculum-agnostic.

Seven Steps is rooted in authorial writing techniques – such as planning, drafting, and engaging an audience – which means the program complements any curriculum.

While it is not tied to a specific set of standards, its core principles align with many educational frameworks worldwide.

Educators often ask how Seven Steps addresses the requirements of their curriculum, so we’ve outlined those alignments in this blog.

"It makes such a difference to children's progress very quickly."
